Tremlett was recalled to play just his fourth Test, and first in more than three years, because of a tour-ending injury to Stuart Broad, and grasped his opportunity with both hands.
Preferred over Tim Bresnan because of the bounce he was likely to extract from the wicket, the 29-year-old admitted to pre-match nerves, but blew them away when he clean bowled another player returning to Test cricket, Australian opener Phil Hughes, with the last ball of his first over of the match.
He then went on to claim the prized wicket of Michael Clarke, as well as youngster Steven Smith, both caught behind the wicket, in claiming 3-63 from 23 impressive overs as England closed in on retaining the

He is really the hero for Pakistan in the 2nd ODI against South Africa in Dubai. He played 72 balls for his 109 runs and hit 10 sixes and 7 fours. It was really a fantastic inning in the difficult situation. Pakistan team was looked down after losing five wickets but Razzak returned them their pride.
Shahid Afridi played aggressive inning in the middle and scored 49 runs on 40 balls. When he got out Pakistan’s score was 136 for 5 wickets. Fawad Alam also played sensibly and secured his wicket. He along with Razzak took Pakistan’s total to 217 runs before he got out.
Razzak didn’t panic even seeing wickets falling on the other end. He also denied many singles and retained the strike. All hits made by Abdul Razzak stayed connected and resulted in maximum. He surely was the man of the match. Series is now leveled with 1-1.
Pakistan reeling at 94-5, still need 86 to avoid innings defeat
BIRMINGHAM: Graeme Swann took three wickets as England closed in on an innings victory against Pakistan in the second Test at Edgbaston here on Sunday.
Pakistan were 94 for five, still needing a further 85 runs to make England bat again, at lunch on the third day as they tried to avoid going 2-0 down in this four-match series after last week”s crushing 354-run loss at Trent Bridge.
Umar Amin was 12 not out and Test debutant Zulqarnain Haider one not out after Pakistan lost four wickets for 32 runs in 60 balls on Sunday.
Off-spinner Swann did the bulk of the damage with three wickets for 12 runs in just eight overs.
From around the wicket, Swann produced a delivery that pitched outside leg-stump and clipped Imran Farhat”s off stump to bowl the left-hander for 29 and end a second-wicket stand of 52 with Azhar Ali.
Pakistan”s 53 for two became 54 for three as Swann took two wickets for one run in seven balls by bowling Ali (19) with a sharply turning off-break.
Pakistan lost another wicket when Shoaib Malik tried to leave a Steven Finn delivery only to glove it to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.
And they were 82 for five when Umar Akmal, extraordinarily playing no stroke, was lbw to Swann.
Zulqarnain came in on a ”king pair”, having been out for a first ball nought in Pakistan”s first innings 72 — their lowest total against England.
Pakistan resumed on 19 for one, having already lost captain Salman Butt for a duck on Saturday.
For the first time this series, Pakistan reached fifty without having lost at least six wickets only for Swann to strike soon afterwards.
Gul urges batsmen to make most of Australia rout
LEEDS: Umar Gul urged Pakistan”s batsmen to build a lead of “150-200″ after helping rout Australia for just 88 on the first day of the second and final Test at Headingley on Wednesday.
Gul played his part with two wickets for 16 runs in nine overs.
But such was Pakistan”s command of the swinging ball, his were only the third-best figures of the innings with teenage left-arm quick Mohammad Aamer taking three for 20 in 11 overs and Mohammad Asif three for 30 in 10.1.
Pakistan, who lost the first Test by 150 runs at Lord”s last week, finished the day on 148 for three – a lead of 60.
Test novices Umar Amin and Umar Akmal were unbeaten on one and eight respectively at the close.
Earlier, Salman Butt marked his first day as Pakistan captain, following Shahid Afridi”s post-Lord”s retirement from Tests, with 45 in an opening stand of 80 with Imran Farhat (43).
“It was a good day for us,” said Gul. “We all bowled well and we will be happy with a lead of 150-200.”
But Australia coach Tim Nielsen insisted his side were still in the match.
“I know we are 60 behind but if we can have a good morning tomorrow (Thursday) morning, take a couple of wickets, not let the scoreboard get out of control, we are still a chance in the game.”
Reflecting on Australia”s lowest total since being skittled out for 76 by a Michael Holding-inspired West Indies at Perth in 1984, Nielsen said: “Any day you walk off and you”ve got 88 next to your 11 batsmen is not a good day.
“Every time we had even the smell of getting a partnership going, we lost another wicket.
“They just bowled very nicely in the conditions and we weren”t good enough to stop the rot.”
Australia struggled when the ball swung during last year”s Ashes defeat in England – although they bowled England out for 102 at Headingley in similar conditions to those seen on Wednesday – and Nielsen said: “The ball certainly swung today and that makes life difficult.
“They (Pakistan) bowled beautifully. They bowled a very good length, they hit the wicket hard and didn”t just expect the conditions to do all the work for them.”
But Australia captain Ricky Ponting gave Pakistan a chance to take a grip by batting after winning the toss.
“We felt it was going to be hard work against the new ball but we felt if we could get through the new ball, the wicket would flatten out into quite a nice batting wicket,” Nielsen said.
“But all the greatest plans count for not much when you are bowled out for 88.”
Australia though have won their last 13 Tests against Pakistan, a run stretching back to 1995. And in January, they conceded a first innings lead of 206 against Pakistan in Sydney yet still won by 36 runs.
“We know are never beaten, that”s one of the great strengths of this team,” Nielsen said. “We know we can compete.”

Arch rivals to clash in Asia Cup today
KARACHI: Pakistan will target India’s ‘strong points’ when they take on their traditional rivals in a do-or-die clash of the Asia Cup in Dambulla on today.
Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, told Geo from Dambulla on Friday that he has asked his bowlers to go all out for the scalps of India’s prolific openers — Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir — and his counterpart MS Dhoni in what is a mouth-watering clash between the Asian giants.
The Flamboyant allrounder, who smashed a brilliant 109 in a lost cause against Sri Lanka earlier this week, said that he wants his boys to play aggressive cricket.
“India’s strength is in their batting,” said Afridi. “In fact their openers and then Dhoni in the middle-order are their most dangerous players. They are India’s strong points and I want to neutralise them. We can beat them at their own game,” he added.
While India began the quadrangular with a bang by crushing Bangladesh, Pakistan crashed to a 16-run defeat against the hosts in the tournament opener last Tuesday.
Pakistan desperately need to beat India to stay alive and Afridi is confident that his unpredictable team can conquer MS Dhoni’s men.
“It’s a do-or-die match and we have to play attacking cricket because that’s the only way we can stay in the hunt for the final,” said Afridi.
It’s the first time that Afridi will be captaining Pakistan against India and the skipper is hoping to make it a memorable match.
“It’s a huge match whenever we play against India and as captain it would be even more important one for me. I’m confident that we will raise our game tomorrow.”
Most of Afridi’s key batsmen including vice-captain Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal flopped in the game against Sri Lanka, but the captain is hoping that they will bounce back against India.
“Most of our boys played foolishly against Sri Lanka. They committed unnecessary mistakes but I’m sure that they will do much better against India.”
Some critics have questioned Pakistan’s decision to play their opening game against Sri Lanka without any specialist spinner though they have Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman in the touring party.
Afridi, however, made it clear that the team management will not come under any kind of pressure and will pick the line-up after closely inspecting the pitch and playing conditions.
“We will decide the playing eleven tomorrow after inspecting the wicket. For the time being our options are open.”
He hinted that Pakistan might replace Mohammad Asif with Saeed Ajmal for today’s match. “The (Dambulla) pitch is wearing out a bit and there is a good chance that it will offer more assistance to spinners in the coming matches.
“We will take a look at the wicket tomorrow and may be go for Saeed Ajmal instead of Asif.”
Afridi, who braved severe cramps on his way to a stunning century, said he is fully fit and will try to give his best against India.
“Actually I was suffering from severe dehydration in the last match and cramps made batting really painful for me,” he said. “But I’m fine now and looking forward to giving my best against India.”
Sri Lanka overwhelm Zimbabwe to win TNT
HARARE: A dominant Sri Lanka came to within a freak run-out of whitewashing Zimbabwe in the final of the Tri-nations tournament at Harare Sports Club here on Wednesday.
The Sri Lankans scored a leisurely 203-1 in 34.4 overs to win with ease in reply to Zimbabwe”s effort of 199 all out in 49 overs.
The run-out stood between Sri Lanka bowling out the entire Zimbabwe team and then overtaking their target score without the loss of a single wicket.
Although Zimbabwe”s Brendan Taylor was named man of the series afterwards it was Tillikeratne Dilshan who stole the day.
He was named man of the match after amassing 108 not out, both for his score and for his captaincy, with his 100 coming up in 97 balls and including 13 boundaries.
It was Dilshan”s seventh one-day international century and his first against Zimbabwe. “I was really elated, both for the 100 and for our series victory to take home after a hard time abroad,” he said.
“We brought several youngsters with us for experience and they certainly benefitted. It was all well worthwhile.”
The run-out came with the score on 160 — Sri Lanka”s highest opening partnership against Zimbabwe in internationals.
Dilshan went for a quick single to Graeme Cremer at point, but when his wicket was about to be broken he kept going and fellow opener Upul Tharanga moved forward from the other end to sacrifice his wicket.
Tharanga produced another of his speciality supporting roles with 72 runs.
The match was killed as a potential spectacle after just a few overs of the Zimbabwe innings.
The home team prodded their way to 15-1 in seven overs and to 40-2 in 15. By comparison, Sri Lanka were 46-0 in seven and 88-0 in 15.
Tatenda Taibu was initially a culprit with only four runs from his first 22 balls faced, but he redeemed himself by becoming easily Zimbabwe”s top scorer with 71.
Their meagre 199 runs was soon overwhelmed by Dilshan and Tharanga, who gobbled up the Zimbabwe bowling with ease, if not quite disdain.
Wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor said at the presentations: “We actually worked very hard just to get here. Everybody did well in the series and we expect to move forward step by step from here.”
Home team captain Elton Chigumbura said: “We were put under pressure right from the start and just couldn”t get going early on. But we take a lot of pluses from the last two weeks.”
India, the other team in the Tri-nation series, will play Zimbabwe in two Twenty20 matches this weekend and on Thursday a game has been arranged for them against Zimbabwe A.
