Staff Report

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to impose a life ban on wicket keeper Zulqarnain Haider, who fled Dubai for London ahead of the last One Day International (ODI) against South Africa.

According to PCB sources, Haider fled to London without informing the PCB or the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The ICC is examining Zulqarnain Haider’s statements, sources said.

PCB said that Zulqarnain Haider’s step is a conspiracy to defraud Pakistan cricket.

On the other hand, Haider’s family has refused to speak to the media, but confirmed that the wicket keeper is safe and sound in London. Trend Pk

ce3a1e7cf2st1 Gautam Gambhir to skip third TestIndia’s dashing left handed opener Gautam Gambhir will miss the third and final Test at Mumbai due to family commitments. The southpaw has been given leave by the BCCI to attend his sister’s marriage. Gambhir has been in cracking form for India saving the first Test at Ahmedabad with a century and then starring in the innings victory at Kanpur with a superb 167 on the first day.

Replacing Gautam Gambhir is most probably going to be another specialist opener Murali Vijay from Tamil Nadu. The right handed Vijay had played one Test so far which was against Australia. The third and final Test at Mumbai is to be played at the Brabourne Stadium from the 2nd of December.

India’s Squad for third Test at Mumbai : MS Dhoni (Captain and Wicket Keeper), Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha, Murali Vijay and S Badrinath.

Shaniya Davis Autopsy

06bf67ab4850x187 Shaniya Davis AutopsyShaniya Davis Autopsy: Hoping to find cause of death, Since Shaniya Nicole Davis’s disappearance, there have been public plee’s by father and aunt to bring the girl back to safety, but after a tip off to the police, 5-year-old Shaniya’s body was recovered on Walker Road, off N.C. Highway 87.

The autopsy of Shaniya is set to take place in Chapel Hill at the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and officials are hoping that the cause of death will make itself clear when the autopsy is complete. A press conference was cancelled in the light of new evidence in the case.

The body of Shaniya, was found in the woods, buried in a thick area of brush and trees. Deer carcasses are usually thought to be dumped here occasionally. She was possibly taken here so that the body could have decomposed, or so that predators could have devoured the evidence. This is only speculation, though.

The mother of the 5-year-old, who is currently in custody for human trafficking and child abuse involving prostitution, amongst other felonies had recently been given permission by the father of the child to take care of her, as it was he that brought her up with the help of Shaniya’s aunt.

When the girl was kidnapped from her home in Fayetteville at around 5.30am, she appeared on a hotel security camera, approximately 30 miles away, being held by a man thought to be Mario Andrette McNeill, who is in custody and has admitted to taking the child, but will strongly plead not-guilty to kidnap.

Sri Lanka call the shots with Mahela scoring a double century

c5d65ab8a6st Sri Lanka call the shots with Mahela scoring a double centurySri Lanka completely dominated the proceedings on Day 3 of the Ahmedabad Test as they piled up their highest ever total in India. The visitors ended the day’s play at a commanding 591 for 5 with former Captain Mahela Jayawardene still unfinished on 204 (from 339 balls with 17 fours and a six). Giving him company since the last 70 overs or so is Wicket Keeper Prasanna Jayawardene who has moved onto 84 (from 186 balls with 4 fours). The two Jayawardenes are in an unbroken stand of 216 runs for the sixth wicket and have taken Sri Lanka to a handsome first innings lead of 165.

It was a terrible day for the Indian bowlers with only two wickets to show for their hard work. The overnight batsmen – Mahela Jayawardene and Samaraweera saw through the first hour of play to shut the door on any chances of an Indian win by reducing the deficit under 100. India finally got the breakthrough in the 87th over when Yuvraj Singh at squareleg took a sharp catch offered by a pull shot from Samaraweera (70 from 145 balls). At the stroke of lunch, Mahela Jayawardene lost Angelo Mathews when the all-rounder was wrongly given caught at short leg off Harbhajan Singh.

Sri Lanka went to lunch at 375 for 5 which provided India the chance of cutting down on a possible lead. However, the pitch was too flat for taking wickets in a hurry and the Indians were defied by yet another big partnership with Mahela Jayawardene remaining as the cornerstone. Along with Prasanna Jayawardene, he defied the Indian bowlers in the post lunch session and the post tea session. The visitors now call the shots in this match and have forced India into a position where they can only fight for a draw.

After a very long time, India finally gets to play Test Cricket, infact the last time played the longer version was back in April against New Zealand! For the record, the last Test they played at home was in December 2008 against England. That’s quite stunning to see Test Cricket take a backseat not because of the quality but solely due to the emergence of various T20 Tournaments all of a sudden. The India-Sri Lanka Test Series which starts tomorrow is not going to lack any entertainment for sure. The Indian team has an exciting batting line-up which begins with Virender Sehwag at the top, the three experienced guns in Dravid, Tendulkar and Laxman followed by the young Yuvraj and Dhoni. Partnering Sehwag is one of India’s underrated player in Gautam Gambhir who has played a couple of great knocks against Australia and New Zealand. The Sri Lankans are exciting in their own right because of the three superb spinners in Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath. It is a pity if one of Mendis and Herath is going to sit out in the match.

The contest between the Sri Lankan spinners and the Indian batsmen will be a mouth-watering one. The Indian bowling attack will rely on Harbhajan Singh as usual though he should be getting decent support from Amit Mishra. I expect Harbhajan Singh to take most of his wicket with the sptting top spinner that perfectly lands on the seam. Well and Zaheer Khan makes a comeback into international cricket and will most probably have Ishant Sharma as his new ball partner. As India tends to play with six batsman plus the wicket keeper batsman, the talented Sreesanth might be cooling his heels in the dressing room.

The first Test is at the Motera in Ahmedabad which traditionally takes spin. The pitch at Motera has also been on the drier side which means that the conditions are conducive for reverse swing. Motera wicket has also been traditionally slow and low as the match progresses. The Indian pace attack here scores over the Sri Lankans in this regard. Nuwan Kulasekara did superbly against Pakistan in Sri Lanka but will his swing bowling be effective against the technically sound Indian batsmen remains to be seen. Sri Lanka could also take India’s route of playing it safe by having 6 batsmen in the side.

Sri Lanka have never won a Test Match in India and their bowlers have struggled to take wickets on the generally good better batting tracks here compared to what it is back home. The pressure will be on them really to keep the heavily talented Indian batting down. At the same time, their batsmen led by Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have to ensure that they get the big scores and not get out after getting a start.

The two teams will clash again tomorrow in a simlar format before heading into the more serious business of the ODI and the Test Series.

England go into the first T20I with the embarassment of losing a warm-up match against South Africa A at Bloemfontein. The visitors were bundled out for a paltry 89 on Tuesday. The batsmen seem to be low in confidence but the bowlers did well for them by stretching that match till the 18th over and taking six wickets of a decent South Africa A side.

Here are the two squads for tonight’s Twenty20 International :

South Africa : Graeme Smith (Captain), 2 Loots Bosman, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Heino Kuhn, Mark Boucher (Wicket Keeper), Ryan McLaren, Roelof van der Merwe, Wayne Parnell, Johan Botha, Yusuf Abdulla, Dale Steyn, Charl Langeveldt

England : Paul Collingwood (Captain), Joe Denly, Luke Wright, Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott,  Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior (Wicket Keeper), Tim Bresnan, Adil Rashid, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, Sajid Mahmood, James Anderson, Graham Onions
