ed52a05dsa spalding So Who is Esperanza Spalding?Esperanza Spalding was the winner of the Grammy Award for Best New Artist on Sunday night. For many, especially Justin Bieber fans her win was a big surprise, to the point where Bieber fans hijacked her Wikipedia page with a barrage of insults and nasty comments. To be nominated for the award was a big surprise even to Esperanza Spalding;

“I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination, me being a little old jazz musician and everything.”

Esperanza Spalding grew up in Portland, Oregon and at 26 she is already an accomplished jazz musician. Next she will be supporting Prince for his tour “Welcome 2 America” which starts later this month. She has been quoted referring to Prince as “a dear friend”. She is currently writing the music for a new album which is going to be called ‘Radio Music Society’ and is set to be released late 2011.

Bangladesh blocks Facebook over blasphemous content

Bangladesh has blocked access to Facebook after satirical images of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the country’s leaders were uploaded. One man has been arrested and charged with spreading malice and insulting the country’s leaders with the images. Officials said the ban was temporary and access to the site would be restored once the images were removed.
It comes after Pakistan invoked a similar ban over blasphemous content. A spokesman for the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) told Facebook had hurt the religious sentiments of the country’s majority Muslim population by carrying offensive images of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Some links in the site also contained obnoxious images of our leaders including the father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the leader of the opposition, said the commission’s acting chair, Hasan Mahmud Delwar. Facebook will be re-opened once we erase the pages that contain the obnoxious images, said Mr Delwar.
On Saturday, one man was arrested by the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka and charged with uploading the images.
Pakistan blocked all access to Facebook – along with YouTube, Wikipedia and Flickr – last week after images of Muhammad started to appear online. People were invited to submit their images of him in the run-up to Everybody Draw Muhammad Day held by some users of Facebook on 20 May. Most Muslims consider representations of the Prophet Muhammad to be blasphemous.
Thousands of people joined anti-Facebook protests in Bangladesh on Friday demanding the site be blocked over the contest.

Pakistan blocks YouTube and Wikipedia after Facebook

The Pakistani government blocked access to YouTube on Thursday because of “sacrilegious” content on the video-sharing website, signaling a growing Internet crackdown against sites deemed offensive to the country’s majority Muslim population.

The move against YouTube came a day after the government blocked access to Facebook amid anger over a page on the social networking site that encourages users to post images of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. The page sparked criticism because Islam prohibits any images of the prophet.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority did not point to specific material on YouTube that prompted it to block the site, only citing “growing sacrilegious contents.” The government took action against both Facebook and YouTube after it failed to persuade the websites to remove the “derogatory material,” the regulatory body said in a statement.

It welcomed representatives from the two websites to contact the Pakistani government to resolve the dispute in a way that “ensures religious harmony and respect.”

The regulatory body said it has blocked more than 450 Internet links containing offensive material, but it is unclear how many of the links were blocked in the last two days. Access to the online encyclopedia site Wikipedia and the photo sharing site Flickr also was restricted Thursday.

The government blocked Facebook on Wednesday after a group of Islamic lawyers won a court order requiring officials to restrict access to the site until May 31. It was unclear if the ban against YouTube would also be temporary.
Dozens of members of the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, protested in Islamabad for a second day running, calling for a permanent boycott of Facebook and supporting a government ban of the website. The protestors originally planned to march on the US embassy, but riot police armed with shields and batons prevented the crowd from moving towards the heavily guarded diplomatic enclave and they dispersed.

Several hundred students also demonstrated in the central city of Multan, where they set alight a US flag and temporarily blocked a road, calling for a blanket ban on Facebook before dispersing peacefully.

Social and religious organisations, students, journalists and NGOs in Sialkot also announced to observe Friday as a Protest Day against Facebook for publishing blasphemous caricatures against the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

They also called for protest rallies to be held in various parts of the city, seeking a permanent ban on Facebook in Pakistan by the government.

Protests have been taking place across the country to condemn the hosting of offensive caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on Facebook. To view pictures of the anti-Facebook protests

Blasphemous content: PTA blocks YouTube

Pakistan has blocked the popular video sharing website YouTube in a bid to contain blasphemous content on Thursday.
This comes in the backdrop of a PTA ban on the popular social networking website Facebook after a controversy surrounding the website hosting an event promoting caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
PTA blocked access to Facebook on a court order over a competition created by a Facebook user who set up a page called Draw Mohammed Day, inviting people to send in caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on May 20. Protests have been taking place across the country against Facebooks failure to remove the offensive page off the social network.
Internet users across the country have also reported being unable to access the English section of popular internet encyclopedia website, Wikipedia. Pakistani bloggers on the micro-blogging website Twitter are in an uproar on what they claim to be a ban on Wikipedia, the popular internet encyclopedia website, and video hosting website YouTube. YouTube was also blocked in the country in 2007 for about a year for what it called un-Islamic videos.

The Wikipedia Technical Blog explains,

Due to an overheating problem in our European data center many of our servers turned off to protect themselves. As this impacted all Wikipedia and other projects access from European users, we were forced to move all user traffic to our Florida cluster, for which we have a standard quick failover procedure in place, that changes our DNS entries.
However, shortly after we did this failover switch, it turned out that this failover mechanism was now broken, causing the DNS resolution of Wikimedia sites to stop working globally. This problem was quickly resolved, but unfortunately it may take up to an hour before access is restored for everyone, due to caching effects.

The first day of spring 2010 is much awaited after the long and cold winter season. The past winter has witnessed some huge blizzards and snow storms, and it is very refreshing to see the snow melt away and see the trees bloom.

The Vernal equinox is a natural phenomenon that takes place twice a year – once in March and the other in September – which signals the beginning of Spring and Autumn respectively.

According to Wikipedia : “The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long.”

This Vernal Equinox 2010 will see an equal day and equal night, and not forgetting the advent of Spring 2010.

2fd35a5b86trade Oil Extends Gains in Asian TradeSINGAPORE : Oil Extends Gains in Asian Trade, Oil rose further in Asian trade on Tuesday, underpinned by a better-than-expected expansion in the US manufacturing sector.

A weak greenback, which makes dollar-priced crude cheaper for holders of stronger currencies, was also an extra factor behind the higher futures, they added.

New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for December delivery, advanced 26 cents to 78.39 dollars a barrel.

Brent North Sea crude for December delivery gained 19 cents to 76.74 dollars.

The two contracts closed firmer Monday, buoyed in part by the US manufacturing expansion.

The Institute of Supply Management said Monday its factory index, also known as the purchasing managers index, grew for a third consecutive month in October with a reading of 55.7 percent.

It was stronger than market expectations for a reading of 53 percent and the highest rate of growth since April 2006. Any number above 50 indicates growth.

“The reading marks the highest point in three and a half years,” said Dariusz Kowalczyk, chief investment strategist with SJS Markets securities firm.

Among the sub-indexes in the survey, the employment index was 53.1 percent, marking a sharp turnaround from last month’s 46.2 percent and suggesting that factories are starting to add jobs.

“This is the first time in a year and a half that US manufacturers increased employment, a factor that bodes well for Friday’s payrolls report,” said Kowalczyk.

The US is the world’s biggest energy user and a recovery in its economy is seen as key to lifting global oil demand, which has been hit by the global financial crisis.

Official data released last Thursday showed US gross domestic product grew for the first time in a year, at a stronger-than-expected 3.5 percent annual rate in the third quarter, lifting market sentiment.
