NIH confirms five new polio cases

ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed that five new cases of polio have surfaced in Pakistan.

Out of these cases, four are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one from Sindh.

In Sindh, polio has been detected in a three-year-old girl from Ghotki. As a result, the number of people suffering from the polio virus in Sindh has risen to 22.

According to the NIH, so far 123 cases of polio virus have been confirmed in the current year, which is a new record in eight years.

Owing to the alarming situation of polio in Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari will announce a new emergency plan on December 8. Trend Pk

Pakistan Railways to increase fares

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has asked the federal government to provide the subsidy on the fares or to allow the department as it could raise traveling charges.

Sources in the Pakistan Railways informed that the department has to pay Rs 50 million to Pakistan State Oil and with the increase in petroleum products, the debt burden would be huge.

Petroleum products prices to go up by Nov 1

ISLAMABAD: The petroleum prices likely to go up by midnight (November 1), Trend Pk learnt Sunday evening.

The petrol price is expected to mount up by Rs 5.97 per liter while high speed diesel will go up by Rs 4.50 per liter.

Sources told that the prices of HBO and kerosene oil will go Rs 5.10 per liter.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority will announce the new prices of petroleum products by midnight. Trend Pk

SC to announce verdict on 18th Amendment today

The Supreme Court will announce its verdict on 18th Amendment case today. According to a statement issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, a 17-member larger bench of the SC led by CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard the 18th Amendment cases.
The hearing of the cases had started on May 24, 2010 and remained continued more than 4 months. The SC reserved the decision after concluding the hearing on September 30 which would be announced on today.

PPP not to give ticket to fake degree holders

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Part (PPP) Friday announced that it would not give ticket to the members who have been declared holders of fake degrees.

The announcement came from Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira who was speaking during the meeting of National Assembly for Information here.

“People’s Party will not give ticket to those members declared holders of fake degrees,” he said.

The Information Minister said the instructions of the judiciary will be thoroughly complied with.

Earlier, Pakistan Muslime League-N also made a similar announcement of not giving ticket to party members holding fake degree.

Death toll from Kyrgyz unrest up to 49

BISHKEK: The death toll from ethnic violence that erupted in southern Kyrgyzstan has risen to 49, with 654 people injured in the unrest, the health ministry said Saturday.

“Forty nine people in total have been killed following the trouble,” between ethnic Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks in the country”s second city, Osh, said a ministry statement.

The previous ministry figures had given the number of dead as 45. The clashes broke out late Thursday and ran into Friday, prompted the government to declare a state of emergency and impose a curfew on the city and neighbouring districts between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am (1400 GMT and 0000 GMT). But there was more gunfire overnight Friday to Saturday, a senior member of the security forces told foreign news agency. “The situation is very complicated. Exchanges of fire are continuing, several buildings are in flames,” he said.

Protest in H-Kashmir against student killing

SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, the authorities arrested veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani in Srinagar and shifted him to Humhama police station on Saturday.

According to Kashmir media service, the move was made following the killing of an 11th class student, Tufail Ahmed Matoo, by Indian police. Tufail was killed while dozens other people were injured when the police resorted to brute force to break up peaceful demonstrators in Srinagar on Friday.
