Shahbaz says engage extremists to root out extremism

ISLAMABAD: Chief Minister of Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif, has said that extremism can be eradicated by engaging extremists in positive activities, and he agreed with the opinion that Punjab’s flood hit areas are dens of extremists.
Addressing a donor conference at Punjab House, Islamabad, Shahbaz Sharif said that the floods have devastated six million houses of the province. Ripe cotton, sugar cane, pulses and rice crops have completely been destroyed.
He assured that with the nation’s strong will power and support from the global community, he will overcome this mayhem.
The CM added that every flood affected family will receive Rs. 20,000 cash, while seeds and urea to sow crops next month will also be provided for free. SAMAA
Punjab CNG stations remain close Monday
LAHORE, Pakistan News : Around 600 CNG stations remained closed on second day, increasing difficulties of citizens.
The meeting of all Pakistan CNG association is to be held today wherein future strategy will be chalked out.
Chairman of all Pakistan CNG association Ghiyas Paracha stated that increase in the prices of CNG from the first of January will not be accepted.
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines added into the difficulties of the association by increasing the CNG prices.
He said that special meeting of the association has been called today (Monday) in which future plans will be decided.
Around 600 CNG stations have been closed down in Lahore and its environs for two days in line with load management plan of SUI Northern GAS Company (SNGC) CNG stations of Lahore, Kasur, Shekhupura and Okara have been shut down for two days from Sunday. Gas supply to CNG stations will be resumed at 6 am on Tuesday. People of Lahore avoided difficulties due to weekly off on the first day of two day closure of CNG pumps as working men and women and school-going children remained at their homes.
Owing to closure of CNG stations, rickshaw drivers seem affected. Some of them said that two days unavailability of CNG will cause starvation among daily wage workers.

Supreme Court accept Sheikh Rashid’s appeal on by-polls for hearing
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan News : The Supreme Court of Pakistan has accepted Sheikh Rashid’s appeal to listen his application to conduct by-polls in NA-55 in Rawalpindi in contradiction to the verdict of the Lahore High Court.
The three member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has issued notices to the government of Punjab and Election Commission to submit its replies in the courts. Chief Justice remarked during the hearing that the Supreme Court would continue its work according to the constitution of Pakistan. The government has the responsibility to conduct by-polls and if the government is not in a position to conduct by-polls then it should inform to the Attorney General Shah Khawar. The Attorney General would ask the Governor Punjab to hold elections.
Earlier, Waseem Sajjad, the counsel of Sheikh Rashid argued in the court that article 224 section 4 indicates to hold by-polls on the vacant seat in the sixty days. The Election Commission had given November 7, 2009 a date for the by-polls on NA-55 but the government of Punjab appealed to the Lahore High Court and indicated in the application that the Election Commission did not make any consultation with the governmnet of Punjab for announcing the date of by-polls. Waseem Sajjad further argued that the Election Commission is an independent institution.
The Supreme Court also issued notice to Attorney General to assure his presence in the court in the next hearing.

Supreme Court of Pakistan hears Haris Steel Mills fraud case
Lahore, Pakistan News :- The Supreme Court bench heared Haris Steel Mills case that deals with Rs 9 billion fraud with Bank of Punjab. Supreme Court has withdrawn the security given to Seth Nisar from arrest, the brother of Sheikh Afzal after his non presence in the court.
The Supreme Court postponed the hearing of the case till January 11, 2010.
The Supreme Court said that Seith Nisar has to show his presence in the court in view to the Supreme Court’s order of December 11, 2009 but he has not appeared in the court and his counsel Waseem Sajjad also didn’t know anything about him. Chief Justice has taken back the safeguard provided to Seith Nisar from being arrested and directed National Accountability Bureau to take action against hi according to law. Supreme Court Bench has provided safeguard to Seith Yaqoob from arrest till the next hearing of the case on the condition to settle matters with NAB and the bank of Punjab on the payment of dues.
Earlier, Supreme Court issued notices to NAB and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to provide reply in connection to the arrest of Seith Yaqoob and his two sons Saleem and Waseem.
FIA also conveyed to court that former Commissioner Islamabad Fazeel Asghar Sheikh has changed his statement earlier given to NAB that he helped Afzal the country. Hamesh Khan has appealed for bail in the American Court which has been defended.

Yousuf Raza Gilani, Good news on 17th amendment soon
LAHORE, Pakistan News : Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that Accountability Bill will be presented in the parliament and the nation will hear good news about the 17th amendment soon.
The prime minister met Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Lahore. In the meeting that continued for around one-and-a-half hour important national and provincial matters were discussed.
The two leaders discussed the situation arising from the Supreme Court ruling on NRO. The prime minister and Punjab chief minister also considered ways to make accountability process transparent and neutral.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said that the Committee for Constitutional Reforms is busy in its work whereas political parties are bing involved in consultation on Accountability Bill.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that the reconciliation policy of the government is commendable. He briefed the prime minister on security measures taken during Muharram-ul-Harram.
The prime minister said that all resources should be used to maintain peace in the province. The prime minister left for Islamabad after the meeting.

PML-N assured it will not demand President’s resignation
Lahore, Pakistan News :- President’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said on Monday that conspiracies against Pakistan People’s Party are being hatched but his party will overcome the present political crisis. Babar revealed that PML-N leadership has assured that they will not demand President’s resignation.
Talking in an interview in Islamabad, Farhatullah Babar said President Asif Ali Zardari is ready to do everything for the supremacy of law and constitution. He said conspiracies have been outlined against PPP in the past also but it will face all political challenges. The presidential spokesman maintained that PPP will prevent confrontation between the institutions. He underlined the need of implementation of Aghaze Haqooqe Balochistan Package for prosperity in the province.
