Samsung may try to block sale of Apple’s new iPhone

The South Korean company is seeking an injunction to ban the forthcoming launch of the iPhone 5 in Europe as well as Korea on the basis that the American company has poached its technology.
Although little is known about the latest version of Apple s iconic iPhone – which could be launched as early as next week – Samsung claims that it will rely on a technology that is protected by patents that it owns. The two companies have been locked in legal battles worldwide over the past few months.
Apple sued Samsung in the US in April, claiming that its products had been “slavishly” copied by its rivals. Samsung counter-sued almost immediately.
A Samsung spokesman said: “We are preparing aggressive legal suits against Apple, shifting away from our defensive strategy. We stand a good chance of winning the cases if we use our patents related to wireless communications standards.”
A successful injunction would be a big blow to Apple, which is now the largest company in the world by market capitalisation and is thought to draw around half its revenue from the iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy on sale in US next month for 600 dollars

WASHINGTON: The Samsung Galaxy Tab, the South Korean electronics giant’s answer to the iPad, is coming to the United States next month at a price more expensive than the cheapest Apple tablet computer.
Samsung and US wireless carrier Verizon said Wednesday that the Galaxy Tab will go on sale in the United States on November 11 and cost 600 dollars.
Verizon Wireless is offering a monthly Internet access plan for the Galaxy Tab beginning at 20 dollars a month for one-gigabyte of data.
“This is an incredible time in mobile technology, and as a company we’re excited to add the Samsung Galaxy Tab to our portfolio,” Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon, said in a statement.

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s resignation announcement Wednesday was long (about 20 minutes), emotional (he was in tears and his voice cracked at times), and apologetic (he said sorry to the people of Okinawa for his handling of the U.S. Marines base issue).

Mr. Ozawa, widely seen as the main power broker in the government, has been embroiled in a political funding scandal since last spring. Hatoyama, meanwhile, has faced questions over revelations that he received $170,000 a month from his mother to support his political activities.
“Since last year’s elections, I tried to change politics so that the people of Japan would be the main characters,” Hatoyama said in a televised address to party members.
But he conceded that he had failed to convince voters that he was capable of implementing the sweeping policy changes he promised last year, crucially his determination to end decades of subservience to US foreign policy.
“That was mainly because if my failings,” he said, his eyes filling with tears. “The public has refused to hear me.”
That failure became impossible to ignore last week when he reneged on a pledge to move the Futenma marine base off the southern island of Okinawa to another part of Japan.
The short-tempered Kan has in the past pressed the Bank of Japan to do more to fight deflation and been positive about raising the 5 percent sales tax in the future to fund bulging social welfare costs.
“If Finance Minister Kan takes over, it would be welcome news for the JGB market because Kan is more proactive about fiscal discipline and about raising the consumption tax than any other cabinet minister,” said Hirokata Kusaba, economist at Mizuho Research Institute.
Kan surprised markets earlier this year by saying that he wanted the yen to weaken more and that most businesses were in favor of a dollar/yen rate around 95 yen. Since then he has mostly toed the ministry line that stable currencies are desirable and markets should set foreign exchange levels.
The BOJ, which has called for a credible government plan to rein in Japan’s huge public debt, is worried a policy stalemate will delay fiscal reform. But the political vacuum will give the central bank breathing space and ease government pressure for further action on deflation, at least until after the election.

Intel announced a processor and MeeGo* software win with Chinese carmaker HawTai Automobile for a future in-vehicle-infotainment platform; a greater than 50-times lower platform idle power reduction with Intel’s next generation Atomâ„¢ processor platform for handheld devices including smartphones; and a collaboration with Google*, Sony* and Logitech* to deliver a new Smart TVs experience powered by Intel Atomâ„¢ CE products and running Android*-based Google TV*.

Google Australia has declined to comment on a report suggesting the search giant had moved to phase out the use of Microsoft’s Windows operating system internally.
A report in the Financial Times said Google was phasing out the internal use of the operating system because of security concerns. It attributed the claim to “several” Google employees.
According to the Financial Times, the directive to move to other operating systems began in January, after Google said it was hacked.

CenturyTel to buy Qwest in $10.6B stock swap
NEW YORK — CenturyTel Inc., the country’s fifth-largest local-phone company, said Thursday that it will buy Qwest Communications International Inc., the third-largest, in a stock swap worth $10.6 billion to gain the benefits of scale in a shrinking business.
The combination would have about 18 million phone lines serving customers in 37 states, but would still be dwarfed by AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. It would be based at CenturyTel’s headquarters in Monroe, La., rather than in Denver, where Qwest is based.
The number of landlines in the U.S. shrinks by about 10 percent per year as consumers chose to rely on their wireless phones or service from cable companies. The fourth-largest provider of landline phone service in the country, by number of subscribers, is now cable company Comcast Corp.
The acquisition continues a trend of consolidation in the landline business. But neither Qwest nor CenturyTel own wireless networks that can compensate for the loss of landlines, as AT&T and Verizon do.
But they hope the acquisition can make their combined company more competitive as a provider of telecommunications services to businesses and expand the reach of their broadband Internet service for consumers.
Analyst David Dixon at FBR Capital Markets noted that the federal government is moving to shift subsidies away from rural phone service and toward broadband lines. Rural phone subsidies are a large source of revenue for CenturyTel, and the shift could be a challenge.
The deal would likely to lead to job cuts at the companies, which are already shedding positions. The Communications Workers of America, the largest union in the telecommunications industry, said it “looks forward to serious discussions” with both companies.
CenturyTel, which does business as CenturyLink, acquired Embarq Inc., the landline service company once part of Sprint Inc., last year.
Qwest provides traditional phone service in 14 mostly Western states and is a successor to one of the regional Baby Bell companies spawned by the breakup of AT&T in the 1980s. Financial maneuvers during the Internet boom left it saddled with a heavy debt load, making it an unlikely acquirer, even though it is larger than CenturyTel.
CenturyTel is offering stock worth about $6.02 per share for each Qwest share, a premium of about 15 percent to Qwest’s Wednesday closing price of $5.24.

Verizon Wireless today ended months of speculation and finally announced the Droid Incredible. We pretty much know everything there is to know about this device already. It will be available for pre-order on April 19, and will hit store shelves April 29The Droid Incredible will set you back $300 at Verizon retail stores when you pick it up, though there is a $100 mail-in rebate card that Verizon Wireless is making available to lower the cost of the device to $200. Of course, you’ll have to remember to send the rebate form in, and the rebate will come in the shape of a debit card that Verizon says should be accepted anywhere.
Interested customers will have to sign up for both a voice and data plan in order to purchase the Droid Incredible.
Verizon says that the device won’t be able to access Skype out of the box, nor the new NFL application it is offering. It says compatibility for those apps will come “shortly after launch.”
