CM presses PM for withdrawal of IRSA decision
KARAHCI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has written a letter to Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, apprising him of the Sindhi people reservations over opening of Chashma Link Canal by Indus River System Authority (IRSA), aiming at release of additional 10,000 cusecs of water to Punjab province, Geo news reported Thursday night.
According to sources, CM Qaim Ali Shah, in his written complaint, has termed the decision of handing Punjab province additional 10,000 cusecs of water as injustice to the people of Sindh province.
He wrote that opening Chashma Link Canal will result in further augmenting ongoing water scarcity in Sindh, which will cost agriculture sector irreparable losses, sources said.
CM requested PM Gilani for withdrawal of IRSA decision at the earliest possible ease in order to avoid reaction from people in Sindh.
Test under Balochistan package held across the province
QUETTA: As many as 380,000 graduates and post graduates here on Saturday appeared in test held across the province to get jobs under the Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan Package.
In Quetta city, 2359 female candidates appeared for the written test in the premises of Government Girls Degree College while 5457 male candidates appeared at Law College and Children Academy.
Five thousands candidates are expected to be selected out of total 380000 for various posts, under the said package.
Earlier, a list of names of the candidates had been displayed at Deputy Commissioner Offices across the province. The selection committees will comprise Deputy Commissioner, EDO Education, EDO Finance, EDO Planning and others.
Around 22 provincial secretaries have been assigned to supervise the test and interview process while divisional commissioners will be helping them in this regard.

Toshiba In Early Talks On Nuclear Reactor :Gates

TOKYO : A company backed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Toshiba are in early talks to jointly develop a small nuclear reactor, the Japanese electronics giant said Tuesday.
The Nikkei business daily earlier reported that the two sides would team up to develop a compact next-generation reactor that can operate for up to 100 years without refueling to provide emission-free energy.
The daily said the joint development would focus on the Traveling-Wave Reactor (TWR), which consumes depleted uranium as fuel. Current light-water reactors require refueling every few years.
“Toshiba has entered into preliminary talks with TerraPower,” said Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Ohmori. “We are looking into the possibility of working together.”
Gates is the principal owner of TerraPower, an expert team based in the US state of Washington that is investigating ways to improve emission-free energy supplies using small nuclear reactors.
Unlike the current reactors at mega power plants, the smaller types could be introduced by cities or states or in developing countries more easily.
Ohmori said Gates, together with other TerraPower executives, had visited a Toshiba laboratory for nuclear power research near Tokyo last year.
“TerraPower is developing a small nuclear reactor and Toshiba is developing a different kind of small reactor. They were interested in Toshiba’s technology and aiming at practical realisation” of small reactors, he said.
Ohmori said the two sides had just begun to “exchange information” but stressed that “nothing concrete has been decided on development or investment.”
Gates is expected to use his personal wealth to back the development of TWRs and his investment could reach several billion dollars, the Nikkei said. The news boosted Toshiba’s share price by around four percent Tuesday.
The Nikkei said TerraPower had decided to join hands with Toshiba as it lacks the know-how to manufacture nuclear power equipment.
Toshiba, which owns US nuclear plant maker Westinghouse, has developed a design for an ultracompact reactor that can operate continuously for 30 years.
The company is preparing to apply for US approval to start constructing the first such reactor as early as 2014 and put it into practical use by the end of the decade, Ohmori said.

China Slams Google For Lifting Censorship

Internet giant Google announced it would shut down its mainland China search engine rather than continue to censor user searches as demanded by Chinese authorities.
Mainland Chinese Google users now will automatically be redirected to the company’s uncensored version in Hong Kong. Google supporters and free-speech advocates hailed the news as a historic moment for freedom of expression inside China.
But government authorities in Beijing lashed out and condemned the move, clearly fearful it could stand as an example to other foreign companies frustrated by China’s ever-increasing controls on commerce and information exchange inside the country.
‘Google has violated the written promise it made on entering the Chinese market’, the Sino spokesperson said. ‘It is totally wrong in halting its filtering (censorship) of its search engine’.

ISTANBUL: A trilateral meeting between the presidents of Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan being held in Istanbul today.
The trilateral meeting brings together Turkey’s Abdullah Gul, Pakistan’s Asif Ali Zardari and their Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai, will be the first of its kind since the November 2009 presidential election in Afghanistan.
The 4th Trilateral Summit Monday will discuss mutual cooperation to curb extremism and militancy in the region. The leaders will also hold talks aimed at strengthening political, economic and security ties among the three countries.
The three-way talks will be followed by a summit of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries in Istanbul on Tuesday, which will also be attended by the foreign ministers of China, Tajikistan, and the vice president of Turkmenistan.
Tehran has announced that Iranian Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi will represent the Islamic Republic.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke, and the Russian deputy prime minister are also expected to attend.

SC Rejects Rehman Malik’s Written Justification
Pakistan News: SC Rejects Rehman Malik’s Written Justification, The Supreme Court has rejected a plea by Interior Minister Rehman Malik and ordered the Attorney General to appear before the court on February 18.
Rehman submitted his written reply in the apex court in a contempt of court case against him. The CJ remarked that there was no apology in Rehman’s written statement, giving sufficient grounds to the SC to initiate a contempt of court case against him. The CJ also questioned that how the establishment could interfere into the judiciary affairs. Stopping the Interior Minister in the court, the CJ told him that the contempt of court case would be proceeded after the appearance of AG in the court. Later, the court was adjourned till February 18.
