cc18e7ba82539w bud seligWhile he may not get his name etched in the record books for a perfect game, Armando Galarraga has been given a consolation prize. The Detroit Tigers organization along with Chevrolet have given the pitcher a consolation prize – a brand new corvette convertible for his recent efforts. The pitcher accepted the car at Thursday’s latest game, and even brought the official lineup to umpire Jim Joyce who will be working the game. Galarraga has received an outpouring of support in the wake of the Detroit Tigers perfect game which was blown by one umpire’s mistake. Fans have been mixed about the bad call, with some lobbying for the call to be overturned, making for true baseball history, while others say it should be left how it is, for purity.

According to ESPN.com, it appears there will be no new precedent set. A baseball official reportedly has confirmed the call will not be reversed. On Thursday, commissioner Bud Selig spoke about the potential for expanded replay and umpiring. However, Selig did not address the bad call from Wednesday night’s game. See full story at ESPN.com.

The call in question came at the end of the Tigers-Indians game. Galarraga had the perfect game seemingly won. With two outs to go, he covered first base as first baseman Cabrera threw him the ball. Galarraga’s foot was on the bag before the Indians’ Donald touched. However, umpire Jim Joyce called him “safe”. Upon further review by the fans, the TV analysts, reporters, and Joyce himself, he had clearly made a mistake.
It wouldn’t be the first reversal in baseball history. On July, 24, 1983, George Brett came to the plate with his Kansas City Royals trailing the New York Yankees 4-3 in the top of the ninth. Brett knocked a two-run home run out of the park to give the Royals the 5-4 lead. But Yankees manager Billy Martin requested that Brett’s bat be examined. Rookie umpire Tim McClelland ruled that Brett’s bat, slathered with pine tar, exceeded the rule that “a bat may not be covered by such a substance more than 18 inches from the tip of the handle.” Brett was ruled out, the home run nullified, and the Yankees notched another W.

161df882c3large dallas bradenDallas Braden, unplugged: A’s pitcher rips into Yankees star Alex Rodriguez
Alex Rodriguez doesn’t remember doing it and Joe Girardi didn’t see it.

But in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 4-2 loss on the Thursday, A’s pitcher Dallas Braden accused Rodriguez of jogging over the mound while on the way back to first base following a Robinson Cano foul ball, which in the pitcher’s mind violated an unwritten rule.

Braden said Rodriguez should have jogged around the mound, instead of stepping on the pitching rubber, a transgression that prompted Braden to go all Gran Torino.

Braden twice yelled at the Yankees star on the field — immediately after the play happened and then after Cano bounced into a double play to end the sixth inning — before excoriating him in a clubhouse interview.

“I don’t care if I’m Cy Young or if I’m the 25th man on the roster,” Braden said. “If I’ve got that ball in my hand and I’m out there on that mound, that’s not your mound. If you want to run across the mound, go run laps in the bullpen. That’s my mound.”

Rodriguez greeted Braden’s objections with indifference.

“He just told me to get off his mound,” Rodriguez said. “I was a little surprised. I’ve never heard that, especially from a guy with a handful of wins in his career.”

Braden, who at one point during his on-field blow-up had to be restrained by A’s manager Bob Geren, fired back.

“He’s right, I don’t even have a handful of wins,” said Braden, who improved to 3-0 this season, career victory No. 17. “I have three. Do the math A-Rod.”

The A’s lefty followed with another brushback.

“He should just maybe watch his captain a little more often,” Braden said, alluding to Derek Jeter. “It doesn’t start and end with him over there at third.”

Rodriguez dismissed Braden’s issue.

“It’s not really a big deal,” he said. “I didn’t know he was talking to me. I thought it was pretty funny actually… I’ve never heard of that in my career.”

Said Braden: “Well, now he has, you know? I don’t go over there and run laps at third base. I don’t go over there. I don’t spit over there. I don’t spit over there. I stay away. You guys ever see anybody run across the mound like that? He ran across the pitcher’s mound, foot on my rubber. No. Not flyin.”

It’s not the first time Rodriguez has been accused of so-called “bush league” behavior. Rodriguez drew criticism for slapping the ball out of Bronson Arroyo’s hand in Game 6 of the 2004 the American League Championship Series. In 2007, the Blue Jays objected when Rodriguez yelled to distract fielders from catching an infield fly.

Despite his anger, Braden said the issue wouldn’t linger. The Yankees play the A’s in two more series this season.

“It’s over and done with as far as I’m concerned,” Braden said. “Like I said, the guy’s a first ballot Hall of Famer. I’m sure he’s moved on already but I’d like to think an impression was made and that he could honor and respect the game and our team and our club and what we’re trying to do a little more next time.”

Neil Diamond Sweet Caroline Live at Fenway Singer Collaboration

Neil Leslie Diamond born January 24, 1941 is an American singer-songwriter. As a successful pop music performer, Diamond scored a number of hits worldwide in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. According to David Wild, common themes in Diamond’s songs are “a deep sense of isolation and an equal desire for connection. A yearning for home – and at the same time, the allure of greater freedom. The good, the bad and the ugly about a crazy little thing called love.”

The nightly rendition of “Sweet Caroline” following the seventh inning was just a little bit sweeter on opening night at Fenway Park. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was one of the more successful pop music performers, scoring a number of hits. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, “as of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand.

Singer songwriter Neil Diamond made a surprise appearance during the Red Sox’ season opener against the Yankees on Sunday night, belting out his hit “Sweet Caroline” as the Fenway faithful sang along. Sweet Caroline is one of the big Diamond tunes. It’s a catchy song with a cool melody and has one of those easy to sing with tones. The song was released in 1969 and I can still remember the hit from my elementary school days. The origin of Sweet Caroline came from Diamond’s affection for Caroline Kennedy after seeing her in an equestrian outfit on the cover of Life Magazine. He wrote and composed the song in about an hour in a Memphis hotel room.

Limp Bizkit
followers probably already know that Neil Diamond and Fred Durst have long been chatty on Twitter, but Diamond’s invitation to collaborate on the new Bizkit album looks like it’s been responded to in kind with an open door to Diamond’s studio for Durst.

44a0275de81x 300 red soxNearly five months after the Yankees’ Mark Teixeira closed his glove on the 2009 World Series, the 2010 Major League Baseball season opened Sunday night with a game that always has Series-level passion: Yankees-Red Sox.

The Red Sox won, 9-7, at Fenway Park. (Read Ben Shpigel’s article.)

Both teams had been typically busy in the offseason, although the Yankees in less typical fashion. A summer after they shelled out $423.5 million on contracts for Teixeria, Sabathia and A. J. Burnett, General Manager Brian Cashman and the Yankees closed their checkbooks and picked up the phone.

Rather than pay the clubhouse and fan favorite Johnny Damon, the Yankees made a deal for Detroit outfielder and good-guy Curtis Granderson. To fill a hole in their pitching rotation, the Yankees sent outfielder Melky Cabrera and some prospects to the Atlanta Braves for former Yankee Javier Vasquez. The Yankees did make a few smaller free-agent signings, inking designated hitter Nick Johnson to a $5.5 million contract to bat in the two spot.

Despite the signings and the departure of a few familiar faces (namely Damon and World Series M.V.P. Hideki Matsui), the 2010 Yankees look very similar to the 2009 World Championship roster. Granderson will be the only new face in the field, and the core of Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettite and Mariano Rivera will be together again for a run at their sixth championship.

The Red Sox, instead, changed the attitude and style of their team, although their roster is far from revolutionized. Departing from their free-swinging days of 2004, Boston focused on building a defensive team that can withstand the grind of the regular season.

The Red Sox opted to let Jason Bay and his 36 homers walk to the Mets, instead signing veteran defensive center fielder Mike Cameron to help young Jacoby Ellsbury in the outfield. They opened their wallets for John Lackey, the marquee free-agent pitcher of the offseason, signing him to an $82.5 million deal. And they replaced Mike Lowell, the hero of the 2007 World Series, at third base with Gold Glove-winner Adrian Beltre.

Anytime the Yankees and Red Sox face off, the tension rises. The A.L. East race, playoffs, pride — a lot more rides on each game. Throw a World Series title defense in the mix, it gets even more interesting.

9f6e122269terios Carlos MonasteriosCarlos Monasterios, Big news this morning: the Mets pitcher was Carlos Monasteries in Rule 5.

Do not worry, not supposed to have heard of him. The fun part is that he took in organizing the Philadelphia Phillies.

Monasteries is a 23-year-old right-hander (will be 24 March) of Venezuela, which produces a hard burden of the 90 low. It was acquired by the Phillies in the deal that sent Bobby Abreu to the Yankees, and has performed with mixed results since.

Originally a starter, he moved to the bullpen in 2009 – which appears 29 times in relief and making 8 starts. Of the 37 games, 35 came to Clearwater in the Florida State League (A). He threw a total of 7 entries for AA Reading last year. He had two saves and pitched a Clearwater.

Overall, his ERA was 3.73 last year more than 89 IP, 75 K, 29 BB, 4 HR, 79 H, to 1.21 WHIP. You can see their full statistics here.

Monasteries Personally I have never seen release, so I can not comment beyond what is available on the interweb super highway. Seems to be a very big leap to go from one ball to MLB, but it has done before.

Verizon Droid Eris:how much I enjoyed using the HTC Hero and now we see HTC coming out with its 3rd version of the Hero and IMHO the third time is the charm. I had a chance to hold and play a bit with the HTC DROID ERIS (Verizon’s version of the HTC Hero) and I could not put it down because the form factor is so compelling. It is wrapped in black soft touch material, it is narrow so it feels like a phone, it is thin, it is dense, and it has curves that make a supermodel envious. I have not yet used a Verizon DROID, but every review I read stated the keyboard was not that great so the HTC DROID ERIS without a keyboard and much more pocketable form factor may be the Android device of choice on Verizon.more info
Amazingly, HTC was able to pack in their awesome Sense UI into the ERIS at this low $100 price point and you may just see me at Best Buy tomorrow, 6 November, picking this one up and adding a Verizon line to my mobile collection.

Harlan Chamberlain,Joba Chamberlain:The throng of media members around the makeshift stage seemed impenetrable, but Harlan Chamberlain motored his way through all of the cameras and notepads anyways. Reaching a blue barrier, he stopped his scooter, strained to look over a crowd of world champion Yankee ballplayers and tried to get a glimpse of his son. When that proved useless, he simply resorted to his considerable vocal chords.Burnett could and a few moments later, Joba Chamberlain(notes) put down the giant blue Yankee flag he had been waving up on stage. The big Yankees pitcher hopped off the stage, disappeared from the view of the Fox cameras and quickly made a beeline for his father. When they came together, they wrapped each other in a huge rocking bearhug. It wasn’t long before both were crying.

They said the same thing over and over.

“We did it, dad,” Joba said.

“We did it,” Harlan said.

“We did it,” Joba said.

“We did it,” Harlan said.

And on and on. They held tight for almost a minute. Their eyes were red when they let go.

You see the Yankees’ $200+ million payroll and it’s easy to get cynical. Same goes for their $1.5 billion new stadium, the seats that cost more than the average mortgage payment, the steroid controversies involving some of their team members and all the endless hype and hooey about mystique, aura and all the Yankee legends and ghosts.

But then you see this very simple and very real scene of a 24-year-old pitcher sharing the hug of a lifetime with his dad and you remember that those father-son relationships — one of the only things that really matter are at the very heart of this great game that we love.more info Yahoo
