It wasn’t clear when or where Maj Gen Jin Yinan made the comments. While some of the cases had been announced before, few details had been released, while others involving the military had been entirely secret.

Among those Jin discussed was that of former Ambassador to South Korea Li Bin, who was sentenced to seven years for corruption. Jin said Li had actually been discovered passing secrets to South Korea that compromised China s position in North Korean nuclear disarmament talks, but the allegations were too embarrassing to make public and graft charges were brought instead.

“In all the world, what nation s ambassador serves as another country s spy?” Jin said.

A Minute With: Ayesha Takia

MUMBAI: She was hailed as one of Hindi cinema’s most promising faces but Ayesha Takia chose to walk away from it all and concentrate on other things in life.

Ayesha Takia 201x300 A Minute With: Ayesha TakiaThe 26-year-old actor is back on the big screen for now but isn’t promising to stay on. Takia spoke to Reuters about her sabbatical, what acting means to her and her latest film “Mod”.

Q: It’s been a long time since you’ve been seen on screen and even longer since you’ve been in a Nagesh Kukunoor film.
A: “I know. For me it’s been two-and-half years. Nagesh and me wanted to do something after ‘Dor’. Of course, ‘Tasveer’ happened but that was not magical so we wanted to do something like ‘Dor’ again. We kept discussing it and one day he called me out of the blue and said ‘do you want to do a film now because I have a script’. We found someone who wanted to make it and suddenly, somehow it all worked out. It was worth it because it has turned out to be a really special film.”

Q: What have you been doing? What’s stopped you from working?
A: “(Laughs) I wanted to consciously step away from things for a year. I have been here for eleven years. I started out when I was fifteen so I definitely needed a break. Everyone needs to step away and see their life as it is. Also, I knew that I wanted to travel after marriage. That was a priority. Business is also important to me, I am still learning from Farhan (Azmi, her husband). He obviously knows this really well and we have some dream projects that we are working on. We have a ten-room boutique hotel in Goa that we are working on right now.”

Q: So what did you see when you stepped back and looked at your life.
A: “I think we evolve with each year. You cannot be in the same place doing the same thing, day after day for so many years. For me, I need to explore other areas of my life, understand myself as a person in different ways. I cannot be putting on make-up, going to my van …listening to someone say ‘action’ all the time. How many days can you do that. How can you not want to know aspects of your life?”

Q: Did you have people advising you not to go on this sabbatical?
A: “Almost everyone told me I was getting married too early, that everything would be ruined. But I was clear that I didn’t want to put everything else in my life on hold till the camera and films got tired of me. I decide when I will do a film or get into business or anything else. Films cannot decide what I do in my life. Or else, I would be concentrating on the number game or getting a PR for myself.”

Q: But does that kind of attitude work in an industry like this one?
A: “It doesn’t actually. But I have been really lucky, I have always said that. I don’t think it can continue to work like that. Even now, I keep getting offers and I consider myself fortunate, because even as an actor, I have so many dos and don’ts as an actor too. I don’t know if it can work for everyone.”

Q: What are your dos and don’ts as an actor?
A: “Well, nothing in particular. Just some things that I am not comfortable doing. It has to with my moral fibre and I not saying anyone else is right or wrong. It’s just what I want to do or not.”

A Cairo-based source from the Interior Ministry confirmed Amer had been release on Tuesday but denied the blogger was beaten by officers.

A student at the state-run religious al-Azhar University, Amer was arrested in 2006 on charges of insulting Islam and President Hosni Mubarak in his blog posts. He was sentenced to four years in prison and expelled from the university.

Asma Jahangir elected as SCBA President

Asma Jahangir has won the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election acquiring 834 votes in total whereas his opponent Ahmed Awais managed to get 796 votes. Ahmed Awais has accepted his defeat. The prime minister and the president have congratulated Asma Jahangir upon her victory. The newly elected President of the SCBA has vowed not to allow anybody in the bar to represent any political party or the judiciary, Dunya News reported on Wednesday.
The election of Asma Jahangir has brought about a big change in the SCBA after a lapse of at least four years. The representatives of the lawyers movement had to face defeat who were deemed as opponents of the administration and staunch supporters of independent judiciary. It was the 13th annual election of the SCBA in which Asma Jahangir has been elected as the first woman president of the SCBA.
After 9th March, 2007, when the lawyers movement got started, the election of the SCBA gained a lot of importance and attention. After the start of the movement, all the elections of the bar were dominantly won by the active members and leaders of the movement. Munir A. Malik, Aitzaz Ahsan, Ali Ahmed Kurd and Qazi Anwar were all the elected presidents who declared themselves as the representatives of independent judiciary. For almost four years their influence remained in the SCBA but now the recent elections have brought about a change. Asma Jahangir, Ahmed Awais and Ikram Chaudhry were all active members of the lawyers movement but this time the representatives of independent judiciary seemed divided. Ahmed Awais who was from the Hamid Khan group was considered a true representative of the independent judiciary but the results of the election have been disappointing for the members and the leaders of the lawyers movement.
On the other hand Asma Jahangir has said that after the independence of the judiciary, she would now strive for the independence of bars.

ICC body proposes Test Championship

September 15, 2010 by

The prospect of a Test Championship has come a step closer as part of restructuring of the international game after the ICC’s chief executive committee (CEC) laid out a set of proposals for five-day and one-day cricket.
Along with the Test Championship, which has been earmarked for some time, they recommended a reduced 50-over World Cup and an enlarged World Twenty20 event.
The proposed format for Test cricket will have the Future Tours Programme (FTP) consist of a Test league running over four years with the top four teams at the end of each period qualifying for a play-off event. The first play-off is scheduled for 2013, the same year England are due to host the Ashes, and Lord’s is believed to be the favoured venue for the final.
In a wide-ranging proposal for the redrawing of one-day cricket, a new league – mirroring the existing team rankings – would be introduced, starting in April 2011 and running over four years to culminate in the crowning of the first ODI league champion in April 2014.
The league would run separately from World Cup which, as the ICC’s flagship event, the CEC suggests reducing to 10 teams for the 2015 event. The 2011 World Cup, to be held in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, will include 14 countries and run from February 19 to April 2. The lengthy tournament is itself a smaller version than the 2007 event, which was widely criticised for including 16 sides and taking too long. Given the success of smaller nations like Netherlands and Afghanistan in Twenty20 cricket the CEC recommends expanding the World Twenty20 to include 16 teams from the 2012 tournament, due to be staged in Sri Lanka, with the women’s event continuing to run alongside. There should also be a Twenty20 league table as soon as possible, the CEC added. Restructuring international cricket is a significant strategic challenge and one that must be dealt with, Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said I am grateful to the CEC and its working group for making such far-reaching proposals to tackle this important issue. I am now encouraged to engage with the ICC executive board to consider these proposals as soon as possible. During a two-day meeting in Cape Town the CEC also discussed bad light, which is now at the sole discretion of the on-field umpires, and said players should only leave the field if conditions are dangerous and shouldn’t go off if floodlights are used even when shadows appear from the artificial light.
