In the recent past there has been a trend of sorts where a lot of big Bollywood actors have been taking a share in the profits of the film they act rather than opting for a fixed remuneration. Now the latest to join this bandwagon is Imran Khan.

The buzz is that Imran didn’t charge a single penny for his recent release Break Ke Baad but instead is part of a profit-sharing agreement. For all his earlier releases, Imran has always gone in for a fixed remuneration and this is the first time that the young actor has preferred taking a share in the profits. However, it’s debatable whether he made the right choice.

When we contacted producer Kunal Kohli to confirm the same, he said, “I can’t comment on actors’ contracts. It’s not right on my part to do so.”

LEEDS: A delighted Pakistan captain Salman Butt predicted a major turnaround in the fortunes of the national cricket team following a morale-boosting win against Australia here on Saturday.

As Pakistan drew the Spirit of Cricket Series 1-1, Salman Butt who emerged successful in his very first Test as captain, said that the win here would have far reaching effects.

“I think Pakistan cricket will not be the same again. Today’s victory would go a long way in attaining the place where Pakistan cricket was in the early nineties. This victory is not an ordinary one. It has come after fifteen years and I think, it would change the way of thinking of all those who only point out negative things,” he said.

Salman termed the victory as one of the best Pakistan have achieved during the last two decades. “I think it is the best victory for Pakistan at Test level during last two decades. There is no doubt that the absence of international cricket came hard on promotion of the game in the country. I am concerned about my people back home, who have got no opportunity to watch international cricket. My team and management attribute this success to them and the young team we have got.”

Salman, who took over captaincy after Shahid Afridi retired from Test cricket following defeat at Lord’s, said it was a big challenge for him and his young team. “It is never easy for a captain to take over in the half way of series. But since I have the backing of young and energetic team, I know we have the ability to pass the challenge with flying colours.”

The confident captain was all praise for his young guns, saying that they had been included in the team despite opposition. “When we lost at Lord’s people started talking that this team is not capable of delivering. The young guns, however, proved that they are strong enough to help the team to achieve biggest win.”

He pleaded to all those involved with cricket in Pakistan to give the youngsters an extended run. “I know these are the future of Pakistan cricket and they should be given extended run so that these talented youngsters show their best.”

He termed Aamer as the find of the decade for Pakistan, saying that he had a great future ahead of him. “I think Aamer is find of the decade for the country. Even at this young age, he is one of the best fast bowlers in the world. He has talent to improve further and hold on to Pakistan attack in many years to come.”

Salman also praised Mohammad Asif. “He is effective and whenever Pakistan looked to him, he delivered. Asif and Aamer bowled exceptionally well and that turned out to be the reason of this historic win.”

Butt said it was just a start and there would be more to follow in future. “The victory has given us boost and hopefully in the series coming up against England, we would be a totally different side. I think we have got the required talent with us to give England a really tough time.”

oil spill pensacola

“Our worst nightmare is coming true,” said Senator Bill Nelson during a visit Thursday afternoon to an emergency-operations center in Pensacola, on the westernmost part of the Panhandle coast.

“You’re talking about enormous potential economic loss,” Mr. Nelson, a Democrat, told reporters. “I suspect at the end of the day you’re going to see some of the biggest lawsuits you’ve ever seen.”

The main oil spill from April’s sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig is still roughly 35 miles from Pensacola. But some branches of the spill could start hitting beaches in the western Panhandle on Friday and Saturday, according to the latest projections by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Winds from the southwest in recent days have pushed the spill eastward, after it reached Louisiana’s shoreline earlier.

Mr. Nelson said he was concerned about increasing amounts of oil becoming ensnared in the Gulf’s loop current, which would quickly carry the spill down Florida’s Gulf Coast and up the state’s Atlantic coast. “We could not only get a Gulf whammy. We could get an Atlantic whammy,” he said.

Beaches remained open in the area Thursday, and local officials expressed frustration as they remained on high alert for oil sightings. “Typically when we get there, there’s nothing there. Either they evaporate, or dissipate, or move in a direction we can’t find,” said Daniel Akerman, a spokesman at the county’s emergency-operations center.

He added that some of the sheen was so thin, it was hard to see except from the air in certain conditions.

Andrew Edwards, a lifeguard supervisor at Pensacola Beach, said his team found some trash on the beach Thursday morning that looked like it might be covered in oil. They handed it over to authorities.

The nearing oil spill couldn’t come at a worse time for the Florida Panhandle, a popular beach destination for tourists from Memorial Day to Labor Day. “I am extremely concerned, both environmentally and economically,” said Mike Wiggins, the mayor of Pensacola.

He said Escambia County, to which Pensacola belongs, generates about $1.2 billion in tourism revenue annually. The county has about 9,000 hotel rooms, and its beaches draw some three million visitors each year.Since the oil spill, BP has lost 15 per cent of its market value — about $21.1 billion.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that the Obama administration is blocking all new offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

An email from the Gulf Coast office of the Minerals Management Service, obtained by AP, says that “until further notice” no new drilling is being allowed in the Gulf, no matter the water depth.

The announcement comes a day after the agency, which oversees offshore drilling, granted a new drilling permit for a site about 80 kilometres off the Louisiana coast, at the relatively shallow depth of 35 metres below the ocean surface.

peru death penaltyThose are the big questions today, after news broke that the young Dutchman arrested twice in connection with the 2005 disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba — pictured above — is now the prime suspect in another young woman’s murder, this time in Peru.

The bloodied body of 21-year-old Stephany Flores was found this weekend in van der Sloot’s hotel room — five years to the day that Holloway disappeared.

The two met at a casino — the same place he first met Holloway, whose case remains unsolved.

An arrest warrant has been issued, and authorities believe van der Sloot is on the run in Chile, perhaps heading for Argentina.

Embedded below is last night’s report from Ashleigh Banfield, which includes the shocking new accusations, as well as the strange history of this murder suspect.
