Sebastian Vettel becomes the Youngest F1 World champion
Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel has become the new world champion, and the youngest in history, after a gripping Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Vettel led from the start and only surrendered the lead after his tyre stop, but the outcome of the championship was effectively decided on the opening lap when Mercedes GPs Michael Schumacher spun and was mounted by an unsighted Tonio Liuzzi. As the safety car came out, Renault crucially pitted Vitaly Petrov, as did Mercedes Nico Rosberg. Both stops later played key roles in the title winning of Vettel.
At 23 years and 106 days, Vettel took the title with a faultless drive from pole position to the chequered flag, resisting a strong challenge from Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, who in 2008 had achieved the same feat at the age of 23 and 307 days.
Pre-race series leader and two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Vettel’s Australian team-mate Mark Webber fell out of contention for the title when they emerged down the field after early pit-stops.

S Korea marks 60th anniversary of Seoul recapture
South Korea held a military ceremony on Tuesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the recapture of Seoul after the invasion from the North. This as North Korea’s ailing leader gave his youngest son his first public title and named him a general.
Thousands of South Korean military officers and civilians along with domestic and foreign war veterans from the 1950-53 Korean War gathered in Seoul to mark the anniversary.
South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak spoke about the ship sinking incident in March.North Korea’s provocation the other day, which killed our 46 sailors, gave us a heart-breaking lesson. With the armistice between two Koreas for 60 years, there has been some laxity in the mind of our soldiers, said Lee at the ceremony.
North and South Korea are still technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce without a peace treaty. Ties between the two Koreas had been sour since conservative President Lee Myung-bak took office in 2008 and ended aid to the North demanding an end to its nuclear ambition.

SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong-il was reappointed secretary-general of the ruling party on Tuesday, North Korea state television reported, during a rare party meeting to elect its leadership and Kim’s eventual successor.
The North’s ailing leader gave his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, his first public title, naming him a general in a move analysts said marked the first stage of dynastic succession in the secretive state media mentioned Kim Jong-un for the first time by name, but without identifying him as the son of the iron ruler, hours before the start of the meeting.
Kim Jong-il, 68, is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008, but despite declining health shows no sign of relaxing his grip on power, experts say. They say his son is too young and inexperienced to fully take the reins. AGENCIES

SEOUL: North Korea’s ruling party will hold its biggest meeting in decades on September 28 to pick a new leadership, state media reported on Tuesday, and likely anoint an heir to the dynasty as Kim Jong-il’s health deteriorates.
Kim, who is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008, has reportedly accelerated succession plans, and analysts say his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, is likely to be given an official title at the Workers’ Party conference.
The North’s KCNA news agency said the conference would be held in Pyongyang “for electing its supreme leadership body,” but provided no further details of the agenda.
The meeting had been slated to start in early September. The report made no mention of the delay.
South Korea said it appeared the meeting was held up by “internal problems,” probably related to flooding. Media reports have also speculated
US OPEN : Nadal makes history with final win over Djokovic
Rafael Nadal finally stormed the most intimidating citadel of the sport where it is played on hard courts when he defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2 in a rain-delayed U.S Open final that spanned 213 minutes and nearly six hours in total.
At 24 he becomes the seventh and the youngest man since tennis went open 42 years ago to claim all four Majors in a career. He did it by displaying his almost inhuman intensity to fight off the brave challenge of Serbia’s world number three.
Nadal is the crowning glory on Spain’s wonderful year of sporting success. The soccer World Cup, the Tour de France and now an almost unparallelled year of triumph in another sport practised all over the globe.

Champions League final: Bayern Munich v Inter
Diego Milito has put Internazionale up 1-0, a right footed finish from near the spot in the match’s 35th minute.
It was an Inter counter attack that saw a long ball played to Wesley Sneijder, who found Milito making a run between Holger Badstuber and Daniel van Buyten. The Argentine finished calmly passed an on-coming Jörg Bütt to make it 1-0.

40 min:
Bayern look to have steadied themselves after losing their shape and composure a little immediately after the goal. We are back in to the routine of the Germans having the ball and Inter droppign deep to squeeze the space.
36 min:
So where do Bayern go from here? They were enjoying the bulk of possession and looked to be settled in to the game before a glorified route one effort handed Inter the advantage. Glorified because Milito’s touch and nerve to wait until the last minute to coolly finish added grace to a hoof up field and then big man winning a header.
34 min: GOAL!!! Inter Milan 1 Bayern Munich 0
We wait no more. Step forward Diego Milito. Latchign on to a ball straight down the middle he just used his strength to win a header then power straight to goal to take a short pass from Sneijder before lifting a screamer of a finish over the advancing Butt. Now we might have a game on our hands. Or Inter may shut up shop. Please god let’s hope it’s the former.

NATO troops wounded in Taliban attack
Several international service members have been wounded in an attack on NATO’s main military base in southern Afghanistan.
So far there’s been no claim of responsibility for the rare ground assault. It’s the third major insurgent attack on NATO forces in Afghanistan this week.
Officials say rockets started hitting Kandahar Air Field at 8 p.m., local time, followed quickly by a ground assault.
A reporter with HDNet who was inside the base at the time said a loudspeaker announcement reported that the ground attack was coming from the north. Maura Axelrod said she could hear heavy outgoing fire.

It was impossible to tell the nature of the attacks, but automatic gunfire and the thud of mortars or rockets could still be heard for three hours after the assault began. The attacks, which appeared to be co-ordinated, were the longest and most sustained against the base in recent memory.
Canada has its military headquarters at the Kandahar airfield. It is also where Task Force Afghanistan has its main logistical base for supplying the 2,800 Canadian troops that live here and at smaller outposts across the province.
The indirect fire attack was quickly followed by a ground assault by a Taliban force whose size is not yet known. Coalition helicopters are engaging the Taliban force; the fighting is ongoing.
The attack is the third major strike against the Coalition in six days, and the fourth attempt to overrun a Coalition and Afghan base in the country during the same time period. The largest assault targeted the airbase at Bagram in central Afghanistan, the largest Coalition base in the country.

13-year-old American climbs Everest,
A 13-year-old American boy Jordan Romero today inked his name into history by becoming the youngest climber to conquer Mount Everest, reported a climbing website.
The youngest climber to reach the peak of Mount Everest hugged his tearful companions and told them he loved them. Then 13-year-old Jordan Romero took the satellite phone and called his mom.
“He says, ‘Mom, I’m calling you from the top of the world,’” a giddy Leigh Anne Drake told The Associated Press from California, where she had been watching her son’s progress minute by minute on a GPS tracker online.
“There were lots of tears and ‘I love you! I love you!’” Drake said. “I just told him to get his butt back home.”
With Saturday’s success on the world’s highest mountain, at 29,035 feet (8,850 meters) above sea level, Jordan is just one climb from his quest to reach the highest peaks on all seven continents.

Also Saturday, officials said a Nepalese Sherpa who lives in Salt Lake City broke his own world record by climbing Everest for the 20th time. Apa, who goes by one name, went up to collect garbage, a growing environmental problem on the mountain.
Several climbers took advantage of Saturday’s clear weather to reach the summit, Mountaineering Department official Tilak Pandey said. May is the most popular month for Everest climbs because of more favorable weather.
Jordan had never climbed above 8,000 meters (26,240 feet), but his team climbed quickly along the final ridge to arrive at the peak hours ahead of schedule.
“The first thing, they all hugged each other and said, ‘I love you, I can’t believe we’re finally here’ and started crying,” said Rob Bailey, the team’s spokesman, by phone from the United States.
“I don’t think it ever dawned on them to say, ‘Oh my gosh, Jordan, you’re the youngest to get up here,’” Bailey said. “It’s never been about setting a record, besting anybody else.”
His mother, Leigh Anne Drake, had been keeping an eye on her son’s progress from her California home using an online GPS tracker. She said it was an emotional moment for both of them.
“There were lots of tears and ‘I love you! I love you!’”, she said. “I just told him to get his butt back home.”
Romero, from Big Bear, Ca., was climbing the world’s tallest mountain with his father, his father’s girlfriend and three Sherpa guides. He reached the summit hours earlier than expected.
“The first thing, they all hugged each other and said, ‘I love you, I can’t believe we’re finally here’ and started crying,” the team’s spokesman, Rob Bailey, said.
Romero had already climbed five peaks including Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. The American boy now needs to ascent Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica to complete his unique goal.
