President congratulates Pak cricket team

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Zardari congratulated Pakistan Cricket team over historical Test series victory against England, TrendPK reported on Wednesday.

The president urged the team to continue successful performance so that the peak of the game can be regained.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf briefed the president about the problems that the board was facing.

It is to be mentioned here that Pakistan won the Test series against England by 3-0. TrendPK

President grants remission in prisoners’ sentence

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has granted special remission in sentences to prisoners on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad -un- Nabi TrendPK reported on Friday.

The special remission in sentences ranges from 45 days to total remission in different categories.

The implementation on the remission cannot be applied on the prisoners jailed for terror activities, treason and others. TrendPK

President Zardari leaves for Dubai for a day: spokesman

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari left for Dubai on a private visit for medical checkup amidst hitherto unresolved standoff between the civil and military leaderships, TrendPK reports Thursday.

According to Presidential Spokesman Farhatullah Babar, the President Zardari will come back to Pakistan in 24 hours.

Addressing the party leaders at Bilawal House a couple of days ago, President Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Karachi Division Senator Faisal Raza Abidi  said Zardari is not on the ECL, he is head of the state; hence, he can go abroad as and when he wishes so.

He added the concept regarding his fleeing the country is an indication of failed mentality. TrendPK

London: MQM chief Altaf Hussain discharged from hospital

According to sources, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain was hospitalised for the last one week in London where he was being treated.

After remained under doctor’s observation for a week, doctors discharged him with the advice of complete bed rest.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and other leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party called the MQM London Secretariat and inquired about the health of the Muttahida chief.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Rehman Malik have sent him bouquets in London.

Nawaz agreed to support Musharraf: WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari told former US ambassador Anne Patterson that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif was willing to support Pervez Musharraf. In another cable, it was revealed that the United States stopped Zardari from buying cheap oil from Iran.

Former US ambassador Anne Patterson wrote on March 10, 2008 that Zardari told her that Nawaz Sharif was ready to support Musharraf and accommodate Justice Dogar as the chief justice. According to another cable, Zardari told former ISI chief Nadeem Taj that Justice Iftikhar should be shifted to his ancestral house in Quetta.

Nadeem Taj said that people’s sympathies were with Justice Iftikhar and the move could backfire.

On one occasion, the American ambassador asked Zardari that what would happen to his 30-day deadline, he (Zardari) replied laughingly that political dates should not be taken seriously.

In February 2008, Anne Patterson wrote that Zardari feared Musharraf would try to harm Pakistan People’s Party through Amin Fahim. Zardari said that Nawaz’s demand about judiciary would be buried in a committee and he (Nawaz) would also be satisfied.

While addressing Party Parliamentarians and office bearers from Gujranwala division here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Wednesday night, the president said his government has achieved successes despite all opposition and criticism.

The PPP will take the country out of all crises, he said.

Bill Gates offers Zardari to assist in anti-polio drive

WASHINGTON: Bill Gates, head of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on Saturday called on President Asif Ali Zardari and offered to assist Pakistan in its anti-polio drive and immunization of children against several diseases.

President Zardari thanked Gates for the offer and invited the foundation officials to work out modalities for expanding polio vaccination programme in the country.

President said Pakistan would put together an effective team to work with the foundation on national immunization programme. Zardari said this year the anti-polio campaign would be launched on January 24.

The government, he said, had already finalized a national emergency plan for polio eradication and set up a national task force to quarterly monitor and evaluate progress.
