Toyota has issued the following statement:
“Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company. This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized. We’re making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible.”
The Toyota Recall list includes a total of 8 vehicles over several years.
Additionally, sales of all new cars from each of the 8 models have been halted as of Tuesday. Koji Endo, an auto analyst at Advanced Research Japan, says of the recall:
“The recall itself won’t be a big problem for Toyota’s earnings, but suspending production and sales could have a big impact depending on how long it lasts.”
2. Pontiac
The Pontiac Vibe is now on the recall list. The Pontiac Vibe recall joins Toyota’s recall list 2010.
This is because the Pontiac Vibe is the same as the Toyota Matrix which is named on the list of 8 models recalled by Toyota.
GM said sales of 2010 Pontiac Vibes have been halted.
At issue are concerns that the car may accelerate unintentionally. There are an estimated 26 Vibes currently on dealerships, total, in the U.S. because of the recent closure of the Pontiac brand.
3. 4. Peugeot and Citron
Peugeot is recalling the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 sub-compact models. They appear to be made at a plant it shares with Toyota in the Czech Republic. Credit Suisse analyst Arndt Ellinghorst says of the recall that it “is relatively small compared to Toyota’s and hence we see limited impact from a financial perspective. But it is negative from a reputational perspective.”
Affected are less than 10% of the two models.
5. Honda.
Honda recall notice is for the Honda Fit Hatchback. The recall reportedly covers the 2007 and 2008 Honda Fit. An estimated 646,000 models are affected.
The Honda recall is not about an acceleration issue like Toyota’s. Rather it’s reportedly about a faulty window switch.
Reports say that the switch if not recalled in time could heat up dangerously causing emission of smoke, or may melt up to catch the fire.
