Latest updates about Whatcom Middle School Fire, Bellingham Herald, A fire broke out around 1 AM on Thursday, Bellingham Whatcom school burned until dawn, when the roof and part of the 106-year old building to collapse.
Strong winds fanned the flames. Fire Chief Bill Boyd told the Bellingham Herald firefighters warned the neighbors to watch for the downwind enthusiasts.
Boyd said firefighters had a quick search of school and found nobody inside before they were forced to withdraw.
No word yet cause a fire.
School District spokeswoman Tonya Rowe said the building through a seismic retrofit.
Police Lt. Rick Sucee said roofers were seen welding the 10:30 pm Wednesday.
District searches for other class room for 580 students.
